TL;DR — Input–output analysis of Korea's hydrogen energy technology investment for 2020–2040. The hydrogen sector behaves as intermediate primary production — high backward and forward linkage. Total production in the hydrogen sector by 2040 reaches 13,484 or 2,979 billion KRW depending on the scenario. A pioneering economy-wide assessment of Korea's hydrogen industries.
Key findings
1. Hydrogen sits in the middle of the economy. High backward and forward linkage effects characterise the hydrogen sector as intermediate primary production — it both pulls from and feeds into many other sectors.
2. Scale depends heavily on the scenario. By 2040, total production in the hydrogen sector is 13,484 billion KRW under one scenario and 2,979 billion KRW under the other.
3. Context. The government's Hydrogen Energy R&D Center invested about 100 billion KRW between 2003 and 2012; this study is the first to assess the economy-wide effects of that push.
Method in one line
Input–output analysis with a scenario-based exogenous specification method, covering the effect of hydrogen energy technology investment on the Korean economy for 2020–2040.
FAQ
Q. What do backward and forward linkages mean? Backward linkage is how much a sector pulls from its suppliers; forward linkage is how much other sectors depend on its output. High values on both mark a sector positioned in the middle of the production structure.
Q. Why do the two scenarios differ so much? The scenarios apply different assumptions about the scale and pace of hydrogen energy supply investment, so the 2040 production figures bracket a plausible range rather than forecast a single number.
Korea has been developing hydrogen energy technology to enhance its energy security. The Hydrogen Energy R&D Center established by the Korean government invested about 100 billion Korean won (KRW) into the development of hydrogen energy technology from 2003 to 2012. This study uses input-output (I-O) analysis, along with the scenario-based exogenous specification method, to investigate the effect of hydrogen energy technology investment on the Korean economy for the period 2020-2040. We focus on two perspectives: (1) the sectoral linkage effect and (2) the sectoral impacts of hydrogen energy supply investments. The overall results reveal that the hydrogen sector can be characterized as intermediate primary production because of its high backward and forward linkage effects. By 2040, total production in the hydrogen sector under two scenarios will be 13,484 and 2979 billion KRW, respectively. This study is a pioneering study into the assessment of the economy-wide effects of Korea's hydrogen energy industries.
